The Parrot’s Perch opens in 2013, when Karen Keilt, age sixty, receives an invitation to testify at the Brazilian National Truth Commission at the UN in New York. The email sparks memories of her “previous life”―the one she has kept safely bottled up for more than thirty-seven years. Hopeful of helping to raise awareness about ongoing human rights violations in Brazil, she wants to testify, but she anguishes over reliving the horrific events of her youth.

In the pages that follow, Keilt tells the story of her life in Brazil―from her exclusive, upper-class lifestyle and dreams of Olympic medals to her turmoil-filled youth. Full of hints of a dark oligarchy in Brazil, corruption, crime, and military interference, The Parrot’s Perch is a searing, sometimes shocking true tale of suffering, struggle―and survival.

The Parrot Perch A Memoir Karen Keilt Books Reviews

  • Karen, I never met you as I was only at the American Catholic School near Chácara Flora for my senior year in 1970-71 after transferring over from the British School. I read your new book, The Parrots Perch, A Memoir in a couple days, and I have to express my admiration for your guts in telling your story. Graphically powerful. Wrenching. I would have read it faster but I found myself putting it down quite often to reminisce. In ‘A Memoir’ you really let it all out. I highly recommend it to all who may have concerns about the untrammeled power of a corrupt system, and yes, it can and does happen here in the USA. I have been away from Brazil since 1971, but reading your book brought back a major flashback on how we were all ‘trained’ growing up in Sao Paulo in the 60’s, to not look any policeman in the eyes, especially the DOPS types. And, yes, we always had some money folded up next to our mandatory ID’s we had to carry. In your original Parrots Perch, I sensed your holding back. In ‘A Memoir’ it was clear you were experiencing a sense of unloading in telling it the way it was, no matter how painful – a real ‘desabafo’ (venting). Congratulations.
  • You know when you are reading a book and you can't put it down but you don't want to read it too fast because you don't want it to end? Well this is that type of book. On one hand I'm glad I finished it because now I can turn out the light a lot earlier. It would make a great movie!
  • Masterfully written, you are immersed into this true story. You are right there with Karen on this brutal journey of torture and injustice. You will find yourself losing all sense of time reading this captivating story. A must read.
  • I read the book with great interest as I lived nearby in that time period so I could very well recognize the places and circumstances that the author so well describes. Precious document for understanding historical developments.
  • This book was amazing, could not put it down I finished it in 1 sitting. Incredibly touching heart felt and eye opening thank you for your story
  • A beautifully written yet horrifying account of one women's nightmare at the hands of a corrupt and brutal 1970's Brazil, bringing attention to a serious problem that still exists to this day where people disappear and are never heard from again. She lived to tell her story which is heartbreakingly painful yet laced with a fierce and unique brand of truth and tenderness. I could not put it down and can't get it out of my mind! Keilt is not only a talented writer but a strong, courageous human being. This book will blow readers away!
  • Having known of Karen Keilt's amazing personal journey for almost years now it's great to have her memoir available for the world to be able to read and be inspired by.

The book takes us through her highs, lows and all that has happened in between---as well as the aftermath of the torture and abuse she had endured and survived. We're able to see her growth, her courage and the determination she shows to not just overcome but use her voice to bring attention and awareness to what happened to her and others. THE PARROT'S PERCH is Karen's experiences but it is also the story of her choosing to live her life after almost having it taken. It is about speaking up, using your voice not just for yourself but to help others. It is about choosing not being defined by what you go through but choosing to experience healing and forgiveness.

Personal and powerful, this is the kind of reminder we all need about what is possible for us if we make the choice to look ahead and not behind. THE PARROT'S PERCH shows that each of us can make a difference.
